Kannur International Airport is the fourth airport in a 600 km stretch, a first in the country but has great strategic significance because of its proximity to the Middle East and also as the catchment point for the Kannur –Coorg –Mysore tourism traffic. It will catalyst a quantum leap in the growth trajectory of Kerala as the State is poised on the threshold of an epochal phase of development. Ranked among the Navaratna Projects in the mission 676 programme of the Government of Kerala, Kannur Airport will also create aviation history as one of the biggest international airports this side of the country. The airport will be managed by the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), a public limited company set up by the Government of Kerala for the purpose. The company, having its Registered Office at Thiruvanathapuram and Project Office at Kannur, is mandated with building ,operating and managing the Airport as per the stringent guidelines laid down by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA),Government of India .


A Green field Airport directly under the radar of the PMO ,Kannur International Airport Limited is a project that will restate the geographic salience of Kerala. It will open up new avenue for travel and trade ,conduit to North Kerala which will give a huge fillip to development in the Malabar region and bring the territory into the main stream of the State’s development, fulfilling the longawaited aspirations of the people of the region .This landmark project thus addresses the key challenge for policy makers in accomplishing a historic development of the State without regional bias. With its scenic beauty and salubrious climate, Kannur is one of the most pleasant places on the Kerala coast . Kannur is also a town of great historical importance as compared to other cities/towns on Malabar coast . Marco polo, the celebrated historical traveller of the 13thcentury has referred to Cannanore as a great “emporium of spice trade”. The backwaters of the district and its lush green ,rain soaked ,virgin forests ,provide opportunities for business in textiles ,spice ,handicraft, etc and also high potential for export of perishable and nonperishable cargo. The region offers unlimited scope for the growth of tourism ,trade and commercial activities .An international airport can provide a tremendous boost to all these activities and can be a nucleus for development for trade ,commerce and tourism in the state

The Project

Kannur International Airport, which is Kerala’s first greenfield airport, will come up close to Mattannur in Kannur district, on the Mattannur-Mysore highway. Modelled on Cochin International Airport, it is being built with public – private participation, with the State government having 35% share capital, 49% by public sector undertaking and rest 16% by private sector and commercial banks.
