The Kochi Metro rail will commence service on Kerala Piravi Day November 1, 2016 said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy after flagging off the test run at Muttam Yard , near Kalamassery, Ernakulam on 23 rd January 2016 . The chief minister said it was a dream come true moment for Malayalees. The trial run was for 900 metres. The CM said the deadline for the completion of first phase of the Kochi Metro project was 1095 days. Of the 137 days left in this period, fast passed construction activities are being carried out, he said. The foundation stone for the project was laid on September 13 ,2012 and the construction activities began on June 7, 2013. The test run is being carried out much before than the expected schedule. Kerala will witness the metro train service this year itself. The project is going ahead with the aim of launching the metro rail service on Kerala Piravi Day, 2016. The chief minister lauded Metroman and DMRC principal Advisor E Sreedharan for being the main inspiration behind the project. Power Minister Aryadan Mohammad presided over the function. Ports and Fisheries Minister K.Babu, PWD Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob attended the function.
